Guide to Creating a Profile

This guide walks you through every step needed to create and submit your profile on Jewish Dissent — from registering an account to submitting your profile for review. You do not need any technical knowledge to follow it.

Your profile does not need to be completed in one sitting. You can save a draft at any point and return to it whenever you like — nothing is visible to the public until you choose to submit it for review.

What is covered in this guide

  1. Create your account and verify your email
  2. Choose your profile type
  3. Fill in your profile — field by field
  4. Save your draft
  5. Submit your profile for review
  6. What happens next

Step 1 — Create your account and verify your email

Click Sign Up in the main navigation menu. Enter your email address and choose a password. You can type your own or click the generate button to create a strong password automatically — it will be copied to your clipboard so you can paste it safely. Then click Create Account.

You will receive a verification email. Click the link inside it to confirm your address. The link is valid for 24 hours. If you do not see the email, check your spam or junk folder.

Clicking the verification link opens a confirmation page. Click Go to Profile and you will be logged in automatically, with the Public Profile editor ready for you to start filling out.

Step 2 — Choose your profile type

The first thing you will see is a prompt asking whether you are registering as an Individual or an Organisation.

  • Individual — for activists, academics, rabbis, artists, organisers, and anyone else acting in a personal capacity. The form will ask for your display name, bio, roles, and public reach.
  • Organisation — for groups, collectives, campaigns, and formal organisations. The form will ask for your organisation name, mission statement, founding year, and size range.

You can switch between the two at any time before you submit. The form adapts automatically, but fields you have already filled in will be preserved.

Note: Choose carefully. This setting determines which section of the directory your profile appears in — People or Organisations.

Step 3 — Fill in your profile — field by field

The profile editor is divided into clear sections. Here is a quick overview of the most important fields:

  • Display Name / Organisation Name — the name shown in the directory. Keep it plain (no titles like Dr or Rabbi here; those go in the Roles field).
  • Short Bio / Mission (Short) — a concise one or two sentence summary that appears on directory cards and search results.
  • Long Bio / Mission (Long) — a fuller description that appears on your dedicated profile page.
  • Country and City — used for filtering and map display.
  • Evidence Link — a public URL demonstrating the basis for inclusion in the directory. This is required for all entries.
  • Consent — confirm that you agree to be listed publicly.
  • Focus Areas, Languages, and Social Links — optional fields that help people find and connect with you.
  • Publications, Interviews, Books, and Articles — optional sections to showcase your work.
  • Profile Image / Logo — upload a photo or logo for your profile card.

Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required. You can leave optional fields blank and come back to them later.

Tip: Hover over the question-mark icons next to many fields for extra guidance on what to enter.

Step 4 — Save your draft

You do not need to complete your profile in one sitting. At any time before submission, click the Save Draft button at the bottom of the editor. Your progress will be saved and you can return to it whenever you like.

Once you submit your profile for approval, editing is paused while it is under review. If you need to make changes before that, save your draft first.

Tip: Save frequently as you work, especially if you are adding links or lengthy text. This ensures nothing is lost if your browser closes unexpectedly.

Step 5 — Submit your profile for review

When you are satisfied with your profile, click Submit for Review. This sends your profile to the Jewish Dissent moderation team.

Before submitting, please check:

  • All required fields (marked with *) are filled in.
  • Your Display Name does not include titles.
  • Your Short Bio is a clear, concise summary (one or two sentences).
  • All links (social media, books, articles, etc.) are complete and working URLs.
  • You have selected your Country.
Note: Once submitted, your profile is locked while the moderation team reviews it. You'll receive an email once the update is approved.

Step 6 — What happens next

After you submit your profile, the Jewish Dissent moderation team will review it. You will receive an email notification once a decision has been made — typically within 5–7 working days.

  • Approved: Your profile goes live in the public directory. You will receive a confirmation email with a link to your profile page.
  • Not approved: You will receive an email explaining the decision. You are welcome to revise and resubmit.

If you have not heard back within 10 working days, feel free to get in touch via the Contact page.

Start a Campaign

Use the directory to connect with people and organisations, then share a public activity or campaign through your profile’s Happening Now section.

  1. Define a clear objective and a practical way people can participate.
  2. Connect with local organisers and existing groups before duplicating their work.
  3. Prepare a public details or participation link, location, and relevant dates.
  4. Add the campaign to Happening Now in your profile editor, including an expiry date.
  5. Submit it for review. Admins can feature approved activities on the homepage.

Keep private contact details, sensitive meeting locations, and information about other people out of public entries unless they have agreed to publication.
